Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) is a government central university located in Motihari, Bihar, India. Established through the Central Universities (Amendment) Act of 2014, the university became functional on February 3, 2016, and is situated on National Highway 28 in the East Champaran district.

The university features a comprehensive academic structure with 7 schools and 20 academic departments covering a wide range of disciplines. These include commerce, management, computer science, education, humanities, languages, life sciences, physical sciences, and social sciences. Students can pursue undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD programs through annual entrance examinations conducted by the university.

MGCU's Atal Bihari Vajpayee Central Library, established in 2016, serves as a critical learning resource center. The library houses over 26,000 books, 13 magazines, 11 newspapers, and more than 125 donated books, providing extensive research and study facilities for teaching staff, students, and research scholars.

The university is governed by the Central Universities Act, 2009, with the President of India serving as the visitor. Its administrative structure includes a chancellor, vice-chancellor, court, executive council, academic council, board of studies, and finance committee, ensuring comprehensive institutional management and academic governance.

The University has hired a building in Chotta Bariyarpur, near Hawai Adda Chowk, Motihari on rent for the
Women’s Hostel of the University.  All students who wish to opt for hostel accommodation have to mandatorily join the hostel mess.

Off-Campus Hostel

The Central Library of University provides access to scholarly information, research support and study facilities as per need of the students and research scholars, teaching and non teaching staff. Central Library MGCUB has more than 10215 Books (Text books, reference books, Encyclopaedia). The automation of Central Library is in process by using library software (SOUL 2.0) provided by INFLIBNET.

The University has three Air-Conditioned vehicles and has arranged transport facilities, on nominal charge, to ferry students of the University from different parts of Motihari to Temporary Campus (TempCamp) of the University at Zila School premises. Students residing in the hostels of the University are also provided transport facility on payment basis from Hostel to Temporary Campus of the University.
