Kurukshetra University, located in Thanesar, Haryana, is a prestigious government institution established in 1956. Founded as a unitary residential university, its foundation stone was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. The university is situated in the historic city of Kurukshetra, known for the epic Mahabharata battle and the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, with its campus spanning 473 acres on the western bank of BrahmSarover.

Over its 65-year history, the university has grown significantly from its initial Department of Sanskrit to become a multi-faculty institution. It has been recognized for its academic excellence, receiving an 'A++' grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and ranking 8th among state universities in the country. The university has been granted academic autonomy and continues to focus on transforming into a modern institution that supports economic and social progress.

The campus boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure and lush green gardens, providing an excellent environment for teaching, learning, and research. One notable component is the University Institute of Engineering & Technology (UIET), established in 2004, which offers six B.Tech courses and seven M.Tech courses in disciplines such as Computer Science Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Biotechnology, and Mechanical Engineering.

The University at present has 25 Hostels (11 for Boys, 1 for Foreign male students and 13 for
Girls) on the sprawling campus of the University. The girls’ hostels provide all important facilities
within the complex. These include common Gym., common reading hall, ATM, photocopy facilities, computer lab and many more. Each hostel on the campus operates its own mess providing hygienic and nutritious meals with a varied menu. In view of a large number of applicants seeking hostel accommodation, the University allows hostels to the students on the basis of their merit in the admission list. Most of the hostels have reading rooms, computer lab., common rooms and Indoor & Outdoor games facilities. The University has also made available the facility to male hostlers for parking their vehicles in the central parking near their hostels. The girls’ hostels are also provided with round the clock ambulance services and a dispensary. The hostel accommodation is subject to availability of seats.

The central library known as JLN library comprises three blocks i.e. Ranganathan Bhawan, Ram Prasad Bismil Golden Jubilee Reading Hall and Savitri Bai Phule Block have a seating capacity of 1270. Presently, the library has well maintained a rich collection of 3,93,970 Books, 15,328 Manuscripts and 221 Journals (Indian and Foreign) covering all the subjects of different disciplines. The JLN Library comprises of various sections such as Registration, Periodical, Internet Services Centre,
Technical, Reference and provides open access to its books and periodical’s collection. The buildings are centrally air-conditioned and with all modern amenities for the reading of the students which remain open from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 midnight on all the days throughout the year.

The university organizes All India Inter University Tournaments and International Tournaments which includes Boxing, Wrestling, Cycling, Waterpolo, Korfball, Netball, Roller Skating, Weight Lifting, and many more games.
