Jadavpur University (JU) is a prominent public state-funded technical and research university located in Kolkata, West Bengal. Originally established on 25 July 1906 as the Bengal Technical Institute, the university was officially converted to Jadavpur University on 24 December 1955 by the Government of West Bengal with the concurrence of the Government of India.

The university boasts two significant campuses. Its main campus in Jadavpur spans 60 acres and houses major engineering, arts, and science departments. The campus features seven auditoriums, including the H.L. Roy Auditorium and Triguna Sen Auditorium, an Open Air Theatre with a 3000-seat capacity, and a six-acre sports complex with facilities for badminton, tennis, kabaddi, cricket, and football. A second campus in Salt Lake's Bidhannagar Sector-III covers 26 acres and hosts five specialized departments: Construction Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Printing Engineering, Information Technology, and Power Engineering.

Jadavpur University has achieved notable recognition in recent rankings. As of the 2025 NIRF rankings, it was ranked 9th among universities in India, 1st among state public universities, and 18th among engineering institutes. The Nature Index also ranked the university 1st among universities in India for research output. Additionally, the university has been recognized by the UGC as an institute with 'Potential for Excellence' and has received an 'A+' grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The university continues to be a significant institution in technical education, rooted in its historical commitment to promoting technical and higher education in India.

Jadavpur university library system comprises the Central Library, Salt Lake Campus Library, 36 departmental libraries, and also the libraries attached with schools and centres for studies.
The University Central Library is housed in a three-storied building on the campus. Its shelf space and working space total 36,000 sq.ft. and is being extended via a newly constructed annex building. This will add another 5,500 sq.ft. Seven reading rooms, carrels, and an alcove for bound volumes of journals provide sitting accommodation for 700 readers. There is a separate library on the second campus at Salt Lake. The space of the Salt Lake campus Library is 6,800 sq.ft.

The Central Library is home to over 6,46,296 volumes of books on record (including the Salt lake Campus Library and those loaned to departmental libraries), 80,700 bound volumes of journals, 13,000 theses and dissertations, and 37,000 items of non-book materials such as reports pamphlets, maps and micro-forms. 

The library subscribes to about 633 print and 2,794 online journals. The university also has access to an additional 9,082 online journals through the INFLIBNET and the INDEST consortia. In total, the university library provides access to around 12,530 Journals.The library subscribes to 30 databases which include Scopus, Econlit etc. and also about 10,057 E-books.

The University has various sports facilities for the students in various sports fields, that are established for the enhancement of sports spirit in students and to nurture the physical fitness of the students.
