The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a prestigious public research university located in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Established in 1909, the institute has a rich history rooted in the vision of prominent Indian leaders and philanthropists. Its founding was notably supported by Jamsetji Tata, who was inspired by discussions with Swami Vivekananda about advancing scientific capabilities in India.

The institute's origins are deeply connected to the contributions of several key figures. Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV donated approximately 371 acres of land, including the former village of Medaraninganahalli, while Jamsetji Tata provided several buildings for the institution's creation. The Nizam Osman Ali Khan also contributed significantly to its establishment. The institute's constitution was approved by Viceroy Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, with the official vesting order signed on 27 May 1909.

IISc has achieved several significant milestones throughout its history. It was granted deemed university status in 1958 and was recognized as an Institute of Eminence in 2018. The institution focuses on higher education and research across multiple disciplines, including science, engineering, design, and management. Hostels are available for both boys, girls, and married women also. There is also sufficient parking facility for bicycles and two-wheelers. Limited accommodation for married students is also available on campus. There are single and double room apartments for married students to stay with their families. Guest rooms for visiting parents of students are also available. The hostel complex also houses small utility shops like a bakery, laundry, cycle repair, hair cutting and pharmacy. There are 4 different mess facilities for students to choose from, depending on their tastes. Two of the messes serve only vegetarian dishes and two other messes are combo-messes that serve both veg and non-veg.

The Library of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) Bangalore is regarded as one of the best scientific and technical libraries in India. It is known as JRD Tata Memorial Library. The library has the collection of more than 1,97,000 books, 2,15,000 volumes,13,000 online books, and many more.
