Acharya Nagarjuna University is a state university located in Namburu, Guntur district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Established by Act 43 of 1976 of the A.P. State Legislature, the university was officially inaugurated on 11 September 1976 by then President of India, Sri Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed. Originally named Nagarjuna University, it was later renamed Acharya Nagarjuna University through an amendment ordinance in 2004.

The university has a rich administrative history, with numerous vice chancellors leading the institution since its inception. Notable leaders have included V. Balaiah, who served as the first vice chancellor from 1976 to 1979, and more recent leaders like Patteti Rajasekhar, who has been serving from 2019 to 2022. In 2009, the university expanded its academic offerings by establishing a University College of Engineering and Technology at its main campus, which holds the distinction of being the first engineering college in the region to be entirely managed by the government.

Academically, the university has developed diverse programs, such as the post-graduate course in Sociology, which was introduced in 1992 on a self-financing basis. The Sociology Department has been particularly notable, establishing research collaborations with international organizations including UNICEF, Global Seafood Watch, and institutions in Australia, Germany, and the United States. The university continues to provide educational opportunities across various disciplines, serving the higher education needs of the Guntur region and beyond.
