Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) is a prestigious public technical university located in Surat, Gujarat. Established in June 1961, the institute was originally founded as a cooperative venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat. The institution is named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India's first Home Minister, who was fondly known as the Ironman of India.

The institute has a significant history of educational development. Initially established as Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering and Technology, it was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology in 2002. On 5 June 2007, the Parliament of India passed the National Institutes of Technology Act, declaring SVNIT an Institute of National Importance. It is one of 31 National Institutes of Technology recognized by the Government of India and serves as the Anchor Institute for the Auto and Engineering sector.
