The National Institute of Technology Warangal (NIT-W) is a prominent public technical and research university located in Hanamkonda, Telangana. Recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India, NIT Warangal has a rich history dating back to its foundation in 1959. The institute's cornerstone was laid by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on 10 October 1959, marking the first of 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in the country.

The institute began its academic journey with initial classes in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering branches. These first classes were conducted in temporary sheds in the Balasamudram area of Hanamkonda, with laboratory and workshop classes initially held at the Government Polytechnic, Warangal. By January 1963, the institute began conducting classes on its permanent site in Kazipet.

Over the years, NIT Warangal expanded its academic offerings significantly. In 1964, the institute introduced a bachelor's programme in Chemical Engineering, followed by Metallurgical Engineering the next year. The 1970s and 1980s saw further growth with the introduction of Electronics and Communication Engineering in 1971, Computer Science & Engineering (BTech) in 1983, and Computer Science & Engineering (MTech) in 1987. In 2006, the institute added a bachelor's program in Biotechnology. Originally affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and later with Kakatiya University, NIT Warangal was granted deemed university status in 2002, further cementing its position as a key technical education institution in India.
