The Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology (GCELT), located in Kolkata, West Bengal, is a distinguished government institute with a rich historical legacy dating back to 1919. Originally founded as the Calcutta Research Tannery by Dr. Biraj Mohan Das, the institution was established following a recommendation by the Munitions Board after the First World War to develop India's leather industry and utilize indigenous resources of hides, skins, and tanning materials.

Over the decades, the college underwent several transformative changes, including renaming to Bengal Tanning Institute in 1926 and College of Leather Technology in 1958. In 1994, the campus relocated to its current address in Salt Lake City. The institute expanded its academic offerings significantly in the late 1990s and early 2000s, introducing B.Tech programs in Leather Technology, Information Technology, and Computer Science & Technology.

Currently, GCELT offers undergraduate programs in Computer Science and Engineering, Information Technology, and Leather Technology, along with a postgraduate M.Tech in Leather Technology. The college also provides a unique certificate course in Boot and Shoe Manufacturing. Affiliated with the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology and approved by AICTE, GCELT is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Higher Education and Directorate of Technical Education of the Government of West Bengal.

The college maintains a vibrant campus life with annual events like the Fresher's Welcome, a cultural program for new students, and two significant student-led festivals: Enginerds, a technical fest first organized in 2010, and Punormilon, a major cultural event that brings the college community together.
