Government College, Dharamshala, located in the scenic Kangra valley of Himachal Pradesh, is one of the oldest educational institutions in the region. Founded in 1912 by Sir Louis W Dane, the then lieutenant governor of Punjab, the college was established to cater to the higher education needs of the hill regions. Initially set up as an intermediate college, it became fully functional in 1926 and was upgraded to offer graduation courses in 1947.

The college boasts a rich historical legacy, with its colonial-style single-storeyed heritage building still intact. It has been a significant center of learning for the surrounding districts of Kangra, Kullu, and Lahaul and Spiti. A notable point in its history is that the renowned Bollywood actor Dev Anand studied at the college for a year from 1938-39, during the time his mother was receiving treatment at a nearby sanatorium.

Government College, Dharamshala has been a pioneer in academic offerings. In the 1950s, it became the first institution to start a graduation course in geology, even preceding the department at Panjab University, Chandigarh. The college has continued to evolve, renovating and expanding its infrastructure while maintaining its historical significance. It remains an important educational institution serving the higher education needs of students in the Himalayan region.
