- The α-helix is a secondary structure where the polypeptide chain forms all
possible hydrogen bonds by twisting into a right-handed screw. It is stabilized by hydrogen bonds where the –NH group of each amino acid residue is hydrogen bonded to the C=O of an adjacent turn of the helix.
- The β-pleated sheet is another secondary structure where polypeptide chains
are stretched out to nearly maximum extension and then laid side-by-side. The structure is held together by intermolecular hydrogen bonds between adjacent chains, resembling the pleated folds of drapery. Peptide vs. Protein
- A peptide bond is the fundamental chemical link between amino acids. It is an
amide linkage (–CO–NH–) formed between the carboxyl group of one amino acid and the amino group of another. A chain of amino acids is a polypeptide .
- A protein is a large polypeptide, typically defined as having more than 100
amino acid residues and a molecular mass higher than 10,000u. However, this distinction is not rigid; a polypeptide with fewer amino acids, such as insulin (with 51 amino acids), is considered a protein if it possesses a well-defined biological conformation.
